Addressing the most pressing needs of our commUNITY

“…to discover our divine nature…

to bring joy and happiness to others…

to fight against our base instincts and transform ourselves to kinder and friendlier individuals.”

– Dr. Alireza Nurbakhsh, Founder of Sufi Service Committee

The Infectious Animation

On Mother’s Day, I had the wonderous opportunity to volunteer in the homeless kitchen, an experience that deepened my appreciation for the spirit of community and the power of compassion. Upon arriving, I noticed Ali and Mr. Noor were already busy preparing hot tea and breakfast for the handful of us who had come to help. Their otherworldly dedication set a warm tone in my heart.

Soon after, Sally arrived with a van loaded with ingredients generously donated by those who couldn’t join us. The sight of the fresh produce and other supplies was a reminder of how many people care, even when they can’t be physically present. As we offloaded the food, there was a palpable sense of purpose in the air.

Sally wasted no time in starting to prepare the meals. Everyone quickly fell into their roles, working diligently to ensure that we met our goal of serving on time. With each passing minute, the kitchen filled with the comforting aroma of rosemary chicken, mingling with the delightful scent of beautifully crafted dessert dishes. The animation was infectious, and I felt proud to be part of such a dedicated team.

As more volunteers joined, they seamlessly took over tasks, showcasing a remarkable spirit of teamwork. It was heartening to see how quickly we adapted and collaborated to create something meaningful for our dignified patrons.

When the time came to serve, we were met with smiling faces eager for a warm meal. It was incredibly rewarding to see our efforts come to fruition, especially when some street friends returned for seconds, clearly relishing what we had prepared.

This experience reinforced my belief that the feeling of caring for others is irreplaceable. The dedication of the volunteers I worked alongside reminded me of the strength that comes from community. Together, we made a difference, even in the face of challenges. I walked away from the kitchen not just nourished by the food we served, but also by the shared commitment to helping those in need. Service is the essence of empathy.

On a fine Mother’s Day morning, it was a privilege to provide a delicious and nutritious brunch to mothers at the homeless shelter. A good time was had by all!

It was lovely meeting people who are so dedicated to volunteering on behalf of people with so little. All for one and one for all!
